Project 2

Starting point.-
My knowledge of music is quite broad however it is mainly focused towards certain periods in time, for example, I really like and know a lot of the 1960 music and 1990s Britpop movement which is my speciality its contrast my weak points are 1950 and prior and 1980s as I have a smaller interest in pop music at that point so i will have to extend my knowledge there.

parameters:

length-i will need to do a lot of research to collect 15 minutes so i will have to watch lots of other documenters and ready many books about the period to collect more knowledge

budget-i will have to do all the voiceover myself as i can’t ask anyone else to do that for me as i can’t spend any money. I will have to write a narrative to say the story over the top of the footage I’ve found this will take a lot of time as I’ll have to write it in advance.

Knowledge-i will have to read a lot of books and watch other fan-made documentaries to know how to fill 15 minutes of the documentary with different facts and interesting parts during the documentary.

documentary research-i will be watching the rolling stones “gimme shelter” it starts by the rolling stones performing “jumping’ Jack Flash which ends at 4:42 then it transforms the mood completely buy showing them listen to the radio and hearing a hells angel talk about them in a bad manner this shows it as more of a somber mood at 15:55  it goes back to an interview

it is being told through a mixture of interviews and songs which tell the story however there is no narrative this could be very hard to achieve if i has to try this as it would all need to be found footagethe documentary had no vocal narrative which gave a very close and personal experience on the other hand it had a very strong visual narrative however i won’t be able to do this myself as i will have a more broad story so i will have to have a vocal narrative however i could be able to tell some kind of story throughout a visual narrative to give it the personal feel

starting points- in adobe primer I will be using 720p quality as it is the youtube standard and if everyone does the same quality it will look a lot better when they are all put together. also, I will make a folder to put all my clips into so I can keep it all organised

the direction of my projects are to look into the psychedelic side of 65-70 so during the documentary i will focus on the importance of 1966 including the huge increase of psychedelic songs and the ways of recording to create a psychedelic song and how they influenced the progression of song producing.

main events in the 5 years of 1965 to 1970:

+martin Luther King is assassinated

+landing on the moon

+death penalty is abolished in England

+England win world cup

+Sgt pepper released

my 1965 knowledge

start point I will start the documentary with the Beatles just releasing help and show them struggling to perform live and the battle between mods and rockers as there was not much psychedelia going on at this point then I will transition into the year of 1966 which I will show the revolution of psychedelic records, for example, the backwards recording in rain and how this was used in tomorrow never knows also the release of good vibrations including why it took 121 takes and the increasing drug use including (Andrea) explains-LSD which was popularized in the 1960s by individuals such as psychologist Timothy Leary, who encouraged American students to “turn on, tune in, and drop out.

middle: into the middle of my documentary I will show the release of Sgt pepper along with magical mystery tour and the release of the doors album and how that was produced because of how advanced the American technology was and how this brought a more poetic side of song style and songwriting and how psychedelia was in full swing

end I will show how psychedelia dramatically died out of mainstream music with main events however the main in 1969 the rolling stone gig and the Beatles split 1970 brought an end to the hippy era which was short-lived at the best of times I will use clips of the rolling stones documentary to show how it ends “gimme shelter” which shows a man getting killed at a music gig for the rolling stones this really stamps out the hippies and starts a revolution towards music with more anger and some music went down a more synthesis side with the endless possibilities for bands to experiment with they moved away from psychedelia and went to space’y’ sounds

Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 14.33.18.png

from the 1965 mind map i will use the information about the Beatles and how the equipment wasn’t there for psychedelic songs yet but it was on the horizon also i will try include the rivalry between mods and rockers in 1965 and how this influenced music.

Screen Shot 2018-11-13 at 12.25.53.png

from this mind map  will try to get across how revolutionary 1966 was to psychedelic songs from backwards recording to being able to record songs in a totally different way

and how lsd became increasingly popular and how artists used this to change and evolve there music to there liking and toward the public

i will also tak about the recording of tomorrow never knows and how that used classic psychedelic sound and how this influenced countless bands to release psychedelic songs

Screen Shot 2018-11-19 at 09.54.52.pngfrom this mind map i will want to talk about the importance of sanfranciaso and the hippies over there and the summer of love over there

i will also want to say about the releases of sgt pepper and magical mystery tour and how the beatles now publicly said the had used lsd and how/if this changed there public image or there popularity

i also want to include how important the recording process of sgt pepper was so important Chilton (2018) emphasises -The Beatles had brought the values of the counterculture into the mainstream. By breaking traditional rules about what a “rock album” should be, Sgt Pepper gave other musicians new ideas and new attitudes to the approach of music.

i may briefly mention the who aswell and how they changed from a harsh mod sounding band to a more psychedelic sound group which in the space of a year

Screen Shot 2018-11-14 at 10.01.02.pngin the 1968 segment i will talk about the downfall of hippies and why people began to dislike like them because people didn’t like them as they wont helping society also the beatles travelling to india especially Harrison who learnt to play the sitar and came back and played it in a lot of his tracks in the Beatles

Screen Shot 2018-11-19 at 10.31.14.png

at this point will try to wrap it up by talking about the tension of the Beatles and Yoko hanging around with them and the altamonte gig from the rolling stones where 4 people died one murderd by the hells angels which dramatically brought an end to the hippie generation and instigated other kinds of rock and led dramatically decreasing in use

With the mind maps they take a long time to write and research however it is going to really help my start middle and end point as if i do it by the years it will give me certain points to defiantly add into the documentry it will give me more of a structure if i set it out like this i can go through year by year showing key events and top songs and albums of that year for the psychedelic side of it.

research plan:

13/11/18– I started to watch the rolling stone documentary gimme shelter and wanted to see how another documentary was put together and from this i found that they didn’t have a narrator which gave it a really close and personal feel however there footage was strong enough to be able to do this from this i can take how important good footage is and if its really good i won’t have to do as much narrating

14/11/18– i started to make mind maps of all the 5 years i had to research from this i could tell very clearly how recording advanced in 1966 as there psychedelic era started and finished it was also a really good way to get the key events over the years and i will try to include this as much as possible the good side to this is that its very easy to read back however takes a lot of time.

20/11/18– i began to look into different scripts for docuntentrys as i was just about to write mine I’m going to try to focus 3 miniutes per year as this will give me enough time to say about all there key events that happened in that year and explain them in enough detail

script:intro

Between 1965-1969 there was an revolution in the world of music with the way it was produced to the way it was played live it included massive changes in the uk especially London as young people began to get themselves money and with this came freedom this allowed them to be able to buy more things for themselves and really begin to explore

1965-

in 1965 the beatles released help which was  a dramatic turning point in the Beatles’ career. The Liverpool quartet made a bold leap from teen beat combo to studio artists. they also released a film to follow which did very well

however in London there was another generation was evolving

mods begin to get more money that ever before because they were able to get jobs it was the first time that young people will be able to get them selves money since the war this allowed them to buy themselves scooters which gave them as a group a sense of freedom which effected the music

the Beatles were becoming ground breaking in the studio as in 1966 they relesead revolver.

1966

in 1966 the Beatles released tomorrow never knows from the inventive use of johns voice to Ringo Starr thunderous drum pattern and the manipulation of sounds with McCartney laughing to sound like a seagull really  changed they way people recored gave birth to psychedelia

by using a lesley speaker it gave john pennons vocals a echo twisting sound which gave the psychedelic sound

the beach boys released good vibrations, which was there effort at a psychedelic record with the electro-theremin which gave it the sound of the unknown

the obscure mood changes throughout the the song give it a essence of the unknown

it was also the most expensive pop song of all time costing £50000 to create

1966 was the birth of psychedelia and more was to come in 1967.

1967-with the summer of love in san francisco and people in london starting to wear

1967 was the prime year for psychedelia the Beatles had just released revolver and after realising they can experiment in the studio instead of playing live as they technology wasn’t advanced enough so everyone could hear them they “felt them selves slipping into average musicians” they released sgt pepper- because they weren’t touring they had as much time as they ended to get this album correct this album along side many, many others really started the hippie movement in san francisco

at least 100000 people gathered in Haight-Ashbury in san Francisco these people were called hippies and it was the summer of love in America mostly young people supporting the hippie lifestyle and behaviour.

1968-in 1968 psychedelic music began to become very popular with many albums being released at the end of 67-68 fashion started to be an important factor for hippies

in 1968 there main reason for hippies was because they wanted to do there own thing and didn’t want to be part of society this was partly down to the baby boomer generation as the youths and young adults experimenting.

the use of lsd also became increasingly popular especially in san Francisco where it was illegal however many people still used the drug along side many others which also influenced the hippie generation

1969-

in 1969 hippies began to fall

at the rolling stones Altermont gig which was a free gig on the end of there America tour they got the hells angles to be security. which didn’t go to well. some big fights which led to 4 people dying one by a stab wound caused by the hells angles this really significantly marked the end of the hippie movement

in the 60s there were many music changing bands the beatles, rolling stones and the who who changed music and inspired many people to make music in many different ways

reflection:

in this project i feel that my mind maps are quite strong and carry enough detail and make it easier to write my script however they do take a long time to make especially 5 of them so if i had to to they again i may look for a easier and shorter alternative that still has as much detail.

if i was to do another project again like this one i will start editing and putting pictures in earlier as i found myself pushed for time towards the end to get end of the project

process: first i did mind maps about each year to what the best information was that i could put into the documenty this helped me and made it easier putting information in however it took a long time to create so next time i will try too find a quicker way to get good information

Screen Shot 2018-12-19 at 11.51.59.png

next i did a rough plan on what i would could put in and how i could long it would be this helped me figure out what information from the mind map i would keep and what i would discard

after that i collected images and videos from the internet and put the into premier which took me a long time but after i did it i was almost done

next i wrote the script which i found easier after doing the footage collection because it made me have a aim on what to write about and i could see how much i need to write for a certain amount for time so i could fit it in.

after this i recorded it and edited it into place in my documentary i found the recording process of it quite hard so next time ill try to get someone else to say my script which will make it easier editing it in was a bit difficult as some of the gaps i had made didn’t fit very well so there was a bit i had to go over so next time i wouldn’t put them in so i would record the script first.

Screen Shot 2019-01-15 at 10.12.09.pngmy first thing i did to start the creation of my documentary was collect images and videos to put into a primer file so i could edit them and make the documentary

after this i found the music i wanted topuut in for this i found some of the top songs from that year that i was focusing on and used that i the clipped it up and got the correct times and how long i wanted the project to be:

Screen Shot 2019-01-15 at 11.17.03.pngafter i put the clips in i aranged them and put in gaps where i would put my commentry over it this isnt the normal way to do it but i thought it may make i easier. after i did this i could see it may make it harder because the audio i recorded waste the exact length i thought it would be so if i was to do this another time i wouldn’t do this first i would recored the audio first then

Screen Shot 2019-01-15 at 11.17.22.pngthen i recorded my speach over the top and edited my gaps slightly to fit the amount of commentry i had and slotted it into the right places this was harder than i had imagined and i didn’t not get a very good sound so i will do it in a a easier way and see if that sounds clearer.

Audition process

I chose the song waterfall by the stone roses to cover as i believe it sounds really good acoustic the song was released in 1989.

i researched the song and mainly acoustic versions as that was what i was doing so i could see what and how other people were playing the song and if there was anything else i could add towards my piece.

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 14.27.27.pngScreen Shot 2018-09-18 at 14.27.41.pngThese are the chords and lyrics through the song however i didn’t play these chords i played a riff around the chord of dsus2.

for the equipment had a microphone in front of my epiphone ej200sce which i bought because i likes the tone of the guitar

Process.

To practice i played through the song and anything i made a mistake at i would redo 5 time if i got them all right i would move on to play it again and would do that at least 3 times a day.

I used my epiphany ej200sce to play and played into a s.e.x1 microphone. which I’m my opinion souned very good i could of plugged it into an amp and record it that way but i prefer the sound from a microphone more than the pickups

For the process we arranged so everyone who played the same instrument next to each other this would make it a lot easier for people who are setting up.

Project 1

Producer – The different types of producer but the main one in music will oversee and manage the sound production which may go from being one song to being a concept album and there jobs can variey from recording to co writing

Roles in the studio – Starting by introducing the roles of all of the personnel that work on studio related projects such as Musician and Sound Engineers. You should explaintheir role in the studio and how they interact with the producer

Session Musicians – that session musician is a musician a that will work with an artist if the need them to be called in. They most often are string and orchestra. they may come in to play one song or even go on tour with the artist.

Runner– A runner is often on work experience or a student that must have good people skills they will make sure the artist is ok and will often make coffee and tea for the people in the studio but if the studio engineer is off they might be called for to step in for them

Studio Manager– a studio manager will oversee everything and often owns the studio he won’t have an musical input but will make sure the studio is safe for the artists to perform and all the equipment is working.

Mastering engineers– mastering engineers is the last step for producing music and first for distributing music and they use digital and analog tools to adjust the sound.

Pre Production-

There are 3 types of production pre production, production and post production. And pre production is the production on a demo or a musical idea. pre production ends when the main production starts.

Production

another type of production is the main production performed by a music producer which can mean many things because of the introduction of logic and looping but most of all production is the making of a song and the producer will help the artist to do that

Post Production

audio post production is another stage of production and includes mixing which is the most important job in post production this includes the editing of tracks and mixing the volume so the song sounds adequate.

Producer

– The different types of producer but the main one in music will oversee and manage the sound production which may go from being one song to being a concept album and there jobs can variey from recording to co-writing. they are also

Papadopoulos (-2008)-one main ail for the producer is to release the full potential of the musical artist, a music producer must show confidence, leadership and musical talent these are the most important traits for a music producer

a good music producer will give the artist constructive criticism and also will give there own musical ideas to benefit the artists sound

a music producer is the equivalent of a film director in film they often will not write the songs but they will control the sound and tone of the song and they will often have lots of musical input towards the final sound of the piece

Problems facing producer –

There are many problems facing upcoming and current producer the main one is that people,e can just record the tracks and edit them all at home to a very high quality a quality that is very close the the level of the studio which will eventually leave producers out of business

safety in studio

working in a studio does carry many health and safety risks there is and order which the studio when turning on you have to turn every thing kn from the wall then once all on you load up pro tools once in protools you have to open the tracks for every microphone once thats done that you turn on the monitoring and start to record.

you can find the video in my folder on the server.

Reverb- reverberation is an effect of the reflection of sound waves of anything from bouncing off walls in a room or a hall each different verity gives a different sound giving more or less vibrations it can be used either digitally using some sort of software or manually

Screen Shot 2018-10-15 at 11.39.22.pngdelay- delay may be the most commonly used effect as it gives an echo effect on whatever sound you would like, choosing the correct delay times is really important if you get it wrong it will give you a completely different sound than you would want. The most commonly known type of delay id analog and tape delay these were the first types of delay and really helped 60s rock be born with there guitar tone

have made 2 tracks to show and experiment with reverb and delay they aren’t full tracks but what is there has all got delay or reverb on it Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 09.34.50.png

Happiness is a warm gun

the song starts very gentle with a mix of john lennons vocals, his guitar and piano only to start with. at 00:12 you can distinctively hear ringo on drums and Paul mccartney come in on bass and George Harrison kicks in with his distorted guitar at 00:14 and verse 1 continues till 00:45 for a small guitar solo verse 2 starts 00:58 however it is completely different. with john on vocals and George joining him in guitar with Paul still on bass at 1:13 the bridge starts. at 1:35 the only chorus starts with john pennons vocals. then at 2:35 all instruments stop and fade to finish.

Turn up the sun

turn up the sun starts with noel gallagher picking through the chord progression with support from gem archer and andy bell on guitar also they include piano into the song at 00:37 noel Gallagher stops picking through the chords and starts strumming this gives a louder and more up beat effect. Liam Gallagher starts singing at 00:53 where he starts to sing the verse 1 the chorus starts at 1:25 at 1:43 the verse 2 starts then the last chorus starts at 2:13 the vocals end at 2:45 with the last line “love one another” then noel starts picking his chord progression intill the end of the song

Cornerstone

cornerstone by the arctic monkeys starts with a very basic short guitar solo that only lasts 3 seconds when straight after goes into the guitar and bass and drum kick in at 00:09 the vocals start from Alex turner at 00:29 the first verse ended for the second verse to start at 00:34 at 1:00 the first chorus starts which consists of alert turners vocals bass and drum the verse 3 starts at 1:20 with a second guitar playing solo throughout it the middle section started at 1:44 which leads into a chorus after its finished at 2:20 the solo starts which leads into the final verse to finish the song off at 2:42

my song:

the song structure will be Intro,Verse,Chorus Verse,Bridge,Chorus

https://soundcloud.com/felixcleevemusic/new-york-rough

the song writing processes came about when me and Jack meet and started to play guitar i had a combination of am chord transitioning into an f which i really liked we then turned that into Am-F-G-E7 making it 1 bar to 2 so we could have more chords this gave it more of a purpose. then wrote the lyrics for the verse were written and we came up with the chorus for the song consisting of a c-Am to keep it in the same key as the verse.

Induction task.

Research is a group or piece of information that has been recorded through different ways. there are two types of research, primary is a collection of data you have collected yourself this could include doing a questionnaire or an interview this would get a brief idea for an answer if thats what you wanted.

Secondary research is when you will use someone else research this could be using newspapers, websites or videos to collect data to help you answer questions. I will mainly be using secondary research as i that is my preferred sort of research and most often reliable sort as it is often produced by professionals also I’ve had most experience with secondary as when i studied for my GCSES i only used secondary as there was no need to use primary research .

i don’t have many computer music skills however through out the course i want to be able to make my own songs, so throughout the course i will want to develop my logic skills. i also want to be able to loop my guitar playing so i can play along side it i could do this using logic which i believe i will be able to do soon into the course. i have only ever used garage band on a mac to record my guitar playing. i never recorded it at a level that was good so i want to be able to use a software where i can record it and mix it with other sounds.

Studio production is a method of recording music which most often gets the highest quality results and while in a professional studio there are lots of rules you will have to follow the most important is to always be on time especially as they will charge you if late this can often be very expensive  secondly you must keep the studio clean as it would be disrespectful to leave it in a mess and wouldn’t be able to use that studio again. I have had no studio experience but throughout the course i will be able to use a studio effectively.

In the Arctic monkeys song “do me a favour” it starts with a consistent drum beat and than at 00:05 the bassist Nick O’malley starts with the first bass line then the main guitar part starts at 00:11 then vocals for verse 1 start at 00:16 then at 00;37 there is a brief break in the music then continues with verses 1 then starts again 20 seconds later. At 1:20 the 1st chorus starts with an increased tempo. then goes back to break at 1:41 verse 2 starts at 1:50 with only vocals, guitar and bass, and with a slower pace with no drums. as the drums kick back in at 2:13 the tempo increases the drums emphasise this. at 2:24 the same verse gets repeated this to build up the end chorus for effect. At  2:34 the tempo increases massively and get a lot louder for effect to build up the chorus. Vocals start at 2:55 which start the last chorus. Then everything finishes leaving just the delay sounds to fade out to end the song.
